Contribution Guidelines

  1. If you add an artifact, it is expected that you will provide a one-line definition of that artifact, its role in business architecture (2-3 sentences), and the domain it falls into (see the list of domains below). Without following this basic structure your contribution won't be useful. Please do not just add in an artifact without stopping to think about what problem it solves and how it can provide value to others.
  2. If you are contributing a standard model (meaning it is the output of a recognized standards body not a defacto standard) please identify the source of the model and the current status. Identify if, in your opinion, it contains artifacts that overlap entirely or partially with the business architecture domains in section one of wiki. You can also identify a model that does not contain artifacts that overlap with domains identified in the Overview one but could be mapped to by a business architecture model (e.g. KDM)
  3. Identify 2-3 business architecture scenarios that this artifact may help with.

Artifact Domains

The following is intended to provide a way of classifying existing artifacts as a way of organizing the artifacts that should be considered for inclusion in a Business Architecture metamodel.

You may add artifacts to each artifact domain category and also add additional domains. Also, if an existing OMG standard addresses all or a portion of a given domain, note it here.

Motivation Artifacts

Includes Objectives, Courses of Action, Rationales and measures.

Objectives and Courses of Action are covered in the OMG Business Motivation Metamodel standard. Measures are suggested to be treated as Objectives. Rationales are not covered by the standard. The standard also defines a hard distinction between Means and Ends which makes it problematic to express when a Means (e.g. a Strategy) becomes an End (e.g. an Objective).

Function Artifacts

Includes processes and value chains

Initiative Artifacts

Includes programs, projects, etc.

Knowledge Artifacts

Captures terms, facts and rules for deriving facts.

Organization Artifacts

Captures organization units, roles, capabilities and locations as well as governance structures within an organization.

Product Artifacts

Captures artifacts that are specific to products that are available in the marketplace.

Standard Models

This section is intended to identify existing or work-in-progress standards at recognized standards organizations that already address a portion of the Business Architecture Artifact Domains from the Artifact Domains section of this wiki. Please add any appropriate model and the domain / artifacts that the model addresses.
