Working Group Purpose & Mission

Mission:

Promote the advancement and understanding of Systems Science and its application to SE.

Systems Science provides a more rigorous, underlying basis to the empirically derived practices to systems engineering that have evolved over time.

Since the working group has a collaborative working agreement with the International Society of Systems Sciences (ISSS) many of our participants are not INCOSE members. Therefore we maintain a presence on our wiki site at https://sites.google.com/site/syssciwg/ 

We also have a google discussion group at https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#%21forum/syssciwg

Scope

This WG contributes with advancing the Systems Science-related concepts that provide an underlying foundation for all Systems Engineering (SE) throughout the life‐cycle.

Systems Science Working Group Purpose
•Systems science provides a more rigorous, underlying basis to the empirically derived practices to systems engineering that have evolved over time.
–The application of systems thinking and systems science concepts and principles in engineering is the basis for the practice of systems engineering (SE).
–Applying SE, and reflecting on the results, helps us improve systems science and systems thinking, further enhancing our ability to design and intervene in complex systems - a virtuous cycle.
–The success of SE applications reinforces the credibility of the systems worldview.

Goals

  1. Highlight linkages between Systems Science theory and the empirical practice of Systems Engineering. (e.g. short, mid or long‐term)
  2. Promote awareness of Systems Science, its origins, and its possible futures.
  3. Encourage advancement of Systems Science principles and concepts.

  • Introduce the efforts to develop a Categorical Systems Theory which has the potential to serve as a mathematical basis for systems science and help strengthen SE tools
