DDS is a specification for [[ddsf:public:guidebook:06_append:glossary:p:publish-subscribe|publish-subscribe]] data-distribution systems. The purpose of the specification is to provide a common application-level interface that clearly defines the data distribution service. The specification describes the service using [[ddsf:public:guidebook:06_append:glossary:u:uml]], thus providing a platform-independent model that can then be mapped into a variety of concrete platforms and [[ddsf:public:guidebook:06_append:glossary:p:programlang|programming languages]].

The [[ddsf:public:guidebook:06_append:glossary:o:omg]] DDS attempts to unify the common practice of several existing implementations enumerating and providing formal definitions for the [[ddsf:public:guidebook:06_append:glossary:q:quality_of_service_qos_policies|Quality of Service (QoS)]] settings that can be used to configure the service.
