**Transport layer security (TLS)** is a [[ddsf:public:guidebook:06_append:glossary:p:protocol|protocol]] that provides communication security between client/[[ddsf:public:guidebook:06_append:glossary:s:server|server]] applications that communicate with each other over the [[ddsf:public:guidebook:06_append:glossary:i:internet|Internet]]. It enables privacy, [[ddsf:public:guidebook:06_append:glossary:d:dataintegrity|integrity]] and protection for the data that's transmitted between different nodes on the Internet. TLS is a successor to the [[ddsf:public:guidebook:06_append:glossary:s:secure_sockets_layer]] protocol.
