A **Cipher** refers to the [[dido:public:ra:xapend:xapend.a_glossary:c:cryptographic_algorithm]] used in the [[dido:public:ra:xapend:xapend.a_glossary:e:encryption|encryption]] and/or [[dido:public:ra:xapend:xapend.a_glossary:d:decryption|decryption]] of information. In common language, **Cipher** is also used to refer to an encrypted message (i.e., [[dido:public:ra:xapend:xapend.a_glossary:c:ciphertext]], also known as ‘code’.
