**Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP)** is a network management [[dido:public:ra:xapend:xapend.a_glossary:p:protocol]] used to dynamically assign an [[dido:public:ra:xapend:xapend.a_glossary:i:ip]] address to any device, or [[dido:public:ra:xapend:xapend.a_glossary:n:node|node]], on a network so it can communicate using IP. DHCP automates and centrally manages these configurations rather than requiring network administrators to manually assign an [[dido:public:ra:xapend:xapend.a_glossary:i:ipaddr]] to all [[dido:public:ra:xapend:xapend.a_glossary:n:netdev|network devices]]. DHCP can be implemented on small local networks [[dido:public:ra:xapend:xapend.a_glossary:l:lan]], as well as [[dido:public:ra:xapend:xapend.a_glossary:w:wan]] large enterprise networks.
