**Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)** is a standard [[dido:public:ra:xapend:xapend.a_glossary:p:protocol]] used for the secure transmission of documents over a network. Developed by Netscape, SSL technology creates a secure link between a Web [[dido:public:ra:xapend:xapend.a_glossary:s:server]] and browser (i.e., [[dido:public:ra:xapend:xapend.a_glossary:c:client]] to ensure private and integral data transmission. SSL uses [[dido:public:ra:xapend:xapend.a_glossary:t:tcp]] for communication.
