**Azure Sphere OS** is a custom Linux-based [[dido:public:ra:xapend:xapend.a_glossary:m:microcontroller|microcontroller]] [[dido:public:ra:xapend:xapend.a_glossary:o:os|operating system]] created by Microsoft to run on an Azure Sphere-certified chip and to connect to the Azure Sphere [[dido:public:ra:xapend:xapend.a_glossary:a:applicationsecurity|Security]] Service. The Azure Sphere OS provides a [[dido:public:ra:xapend:xapend.a_glossary:p:platform|platform]] for [[dido:public:ra:xapend:xapend.a_glossary:i:iot|Internet of Things]] [[dido:public:ra:xapend:xapend.a_glossary:a:application|application]] development, including both high-level applications and real-time capable applications. It is the first operating system running a Linux kernel that Microsoft has publicly released and the second [[dido:public:ra:xapend:xapend.a_glossary:u:unix|Unix]]-like operating system that the company has developed for external (public) users, the other being Xenix.
