The journal is data that is ancillary data to the main [[dido:public:ra:xapend:xapend.a_glossary:f:fungible|fungible]] data. It may or may not be implemented using a separate [[dido:public:ra:xapend:xapend.a_glossary:l:ledger|ledger]] and it may exist within another DIDO network, but its care and maintenance does not have to be part of the ledger’s transactions. For example, the monetary exchange rate between two currencies is ancillary to a [[dido:public:ra:xapend:xapend.a_glossary:c:cryptocurrency|cryptocurrency]] ledger; however, the almost instantaneous updates to the exchange rate would not be appropriate in the cryptocurrency ledger itself.
