The Semantic Web extends the World Wide Web (www) through standards developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).1) These standards provide common data formats and exchange protocols on the web, typically using Resource Description Framework (RDF). RDF facilitates data merging even when underlying schemas differ, and it specifically supports the evolution of schemas over time without requiring all data consumers to be updated or modified.2) “The Semantic Web provides a common framework allowing data sharing and reuse across applications, enterprises, and community boundaries”.3) The Semantic Web is therefore regarded as an integrator across different content, information applications, and systems.
