OMG Space Domain Task Force Wiki Pages

Welcome to the OMG Space Domain Task Force (SDTF).

Next Event

The Space DTF will meet on Tuesday and Wednesday at the Long Beach OMG meeting, December 9-13, 2019. The Long Beach SDTF meeting will include presentations and reviews of the final submissions to the CubeSat System Reference Model RFP. We also have invited a speaker from KSAT, the global ground network provider to talk about their work with smallsat operators. The agenda for the meeting will be posted on the agendas link from the OMG Event web page. The room block discount at the Long Beach Hyatt conference hotel is available until Nov 18th, and the early bird conference registration discount is available until Nov 15th.

Mission

Space professionals committed to greater interoperability, reduction in costs, schedule, and risk for space applications through increased space standardization.

Goals

  • Clarify space, satellite and ground system requirements
  • Provide a transparent space standards development environment, open to participation by all.
  • Encourage the development and use of Model-Driven specifications that allow future-proofing of space systems.
  • Encourage continued space industry member participation to leverage existing OMG specifications.

Ongoing Activities

  • Use the Object Management Group (OMG) technology adoption process to specify interfaces for software components, services and frameworks in space applications.
  • Leverage existing OMG specifications.
  • Involve all interested members of the OMG in the OMG Space Domain Task Force.
  • Issue RFIs, RFPs and RFCs for technology relevant to space.
  • Identify relevant standards, architectures, research and technologies in space applications.
  • Assist and advise the Liaison Sub-Committee regarding its relationship with related Standards Organizations and Consortia.
  • Participate and present in other space industry consortia to encourage further OMG participation.

Specifications

  • XTCE (XML Telemetric and Command Exchange)
  • GEMS (Ground Equipment Monitoring Service)
  • SOLM (Spacecraft Operations Language Metamodel)
  • XUSP (XTCE US Government Satellite Conformance Profile)
  • C2MS The Command and Control Messaging Specification has been adopted and is in its finalization phase.

Work-In-Process

  • CSRM The CubeSat System Reference Model RFP was issued, and five letters of intent were received. Initial proposals are due by 26 August 2019, and will provide a SysML model template for the development of CubeSat missions.

Previous Meeting

The OMG SpaceDTF met in Nashville on September 24-25, 2019. Here are the meeting highlights:

CubeSat System Reference Model submissions

Two proposals for the CubeSat System Reference Model RFP were presented and reviewed. The two submitters agreed in principle at the meeting to work together on a combined submission that is friendly to multiple SysML tools. That final submission is expected at the Long Beach OMG meeting in December.

Future RFPs

There was a discussion of requirements for the draft RFP for the Common User Display Language to define displays that are portable across multiple vendors' satellite control systems. A finalized RFP has not been produced, yet, but the work is important to NASA as it seeks to monitor systems from multiple vendors in its Artemis program for a manned visit to the moon in 2024, with continuing presence at a lunar gateway facility and on the surface of the moon. Dan Smith from NASA Goddard presented slides of the Artemis program goals.

Satellite Operations Ontology/Glossary

The content and scope of a Satellite Operations Glossary was discussed. There is interest in space ontologies from a number of organizations, and the SDTF would like to host and coordinate those activities. The SDTF intends to publish a Satellite Operations Glossary as a white paper for member guidance in new specifications.
