Welcome to the Academic WG wiki

The OMG Academic Working Group (AWG) was formed on 27 September 2018.

1. Mission Statement

The Academic Working Group looks at improving communications and generating opportunities for collaboration between OMG, industry and academic institutions. This could take the form of:

  • Investigating where OMG standards can assist in the development of curricula, including certification courses related to OMG specifications (UML, SysML, BPMN, etc.) – see 4.1
  • Proposing research project topics, in particular but not limited to computer science departments, that can inform the development of OMG specifications and standards – see 4.3
  • Leveraging OMG specifications to improve academic operations
  • Identifying existing academic courses and projects where OMG standards are used
  • Facilitating access by academia to tools that implement OMG standards (in order to support such teaching and research)
  • Providing mutual speaking opportunities for academics and OMG members
  • Helping OMG member universities share information that may result in collaboration with commercial and government members

2. Co-Chairs

The initial co-Chairs of the AWG are, subject to consensus:

  • Charles Dickerson (Loughborough University)
  • Jason McC. Smith (Elemental Reasoning)

Co-chair roles and responsibilities are less formal in an OMG Working Group than they are in a Special Interest Group or Task Force. There are no formal policies and procedures about the organization of a WG. Membership in the AWG is open, free, and not restricted to holders of an OMG membership. However, co-chairs must be from an OMG member company.

Diane Ehramjian (OMG Business Development) and Claude Baudoin (cébé IT & Knowledge Management) are assisting the co-chair in meeting planning, outreach, and maintenance of this wiki.

3. Meetings

The AWG plans to operate through a mix of teleconferences and face-to-face meetings held during OMG Technical Meetings. Our first meeting is planned for Sunday, 9 December 2018, 5:00-7:00 pm Pacific time, in Renton, WA (Seattle).

All members of the AWG can be reached at the address academic-wg@omg.org. To ask to be added to this list, click here.

4. Deliverables

4.1. Catalog of academic courses and research projects

This subsection lists academic research projects, courses, and certification programs that use OMG standards or otherwise have relevance to OMG work.

4.2. Directory of contacts

The following table, under construction, lists contacts we have in academic institutions, their areas of interest, and who at OMG has a connection with them. That last column may be blank for contacts who spontaneously responded to our solicitation messages.

Previous discussion forum entries were deleted and converted into pages containing notes from each of the teleconferences to date. See Section 3.

Jason McC. Smith, 2018/12/29 21:43

Added conference pages for Mar and Jun 2019, to start planning, with initial potential speakers.

Added initial feedback from respondents concerning academic outreach topics and minimal knowledge sets as individual pages.
