Polkadot is an Open Source Software (OSS) Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) and Cryptocurrency Blockchain Platform and Cryptocurrency allowing for distributed computing. Its internal cryptocurrency is DOT.

The network uses a Proof of Stake (PoS) cConsensus Algorithm. The Protocol uses [dido:public:ra:xapend:xapend.a_glossary:b:babe]], is derived from Ouroboros. The protocol was adapted by the Ethereum co-founder Gavin Wood and is developed by the Web3 Foundation with the initial implementation by Parity Technologies.

In June 2021, Coinbase added Polkadot to its cryptocurrency trading platform.
